Heavy rain lashes erstwhile Warangal district in Telangana

HANAMKONDA/WARANGAL: Heavy rain lashed several parts of the erstwhile Warangal district on Monday night. History repeated itself this monsoon season as rainwater entered several colonies, causing severe trouble for residents and disrupting normal life. Low-lying areas in Warangal city were completely inundated, and residents had to wade through knee-deep water to reach their homes. Residents alleged that the GWMC authorities had failed in pre-monsoon works in the Tri-Cities limits. Warangal is the second-largest city in Telangana state after Hyderabad. The GWMC covers the 66 wards, and there is an absence of an underground drainage system; several areas and colonies under the GWMC limits are witnessing open drainage water stagnation.

Cyclone Montha: Warangal underwater, out of answers

HANAMKONDA/WARANGAL: Warangal woke up on Thursday to death, damage, destruction and despair as overnight rain exacerbated the devastation triggered by Cyclone Montha through Wednesday. Families across Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet spent the night trapped by floodwaters as the tri-cities turned into a vast lake. Power lines snapped, roads vanished under slush, and residents carried children and belongings through waist-deep water to reach safety. The flooding, eerily familiar from past years, once again exposed the collapse of the city’s stormwater and drainage systems. Many residents said the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) had failed to clear nalas and drains before the monsoon. With no underground network, open drains overflowed through the night, sending sewage coursing through colonies.
